Manufacturing process: In the production of sebacic acid from castor oil, 2‑octanol is obtained as a byproduct and recovered through recycling. Castor oil is a triglyceride composed of hydroxylated fatty acids, with 80–85% consisting of ricinoleic acid, which is 12‑hydroxy‑9‑octadecenoic acid. Under strong alkaline conditions and at elevated temperatures of 250–280°C, the molecular chains of castor oil undergo cleavage, yielding disodium sebacate along with small‑molecule compounds such as 2‑octanol and hydrogen. The desired 2‑octanol fraction is then isolated by distillation to obtain the final product.
